My top 5 lesbian movies

A choice of top movies is obviously going to vary from person to person, these are my personal favorites. If you haven't seen them they are definitely worth a watch! They are also a great place to start if you a newly 'out' and want some insightful viewing. I've tried to pick movies that show the topic from a variety of angles so each of these will give you something new to consider, they also cover different time periods to give that useful bit of LGBT history to us all. Please let me know what choices you agree or disagree with maybe we can end up with the perfect list for an ideal dvd collection!

Bound (1996)

Starring Jennifer Tilly and Gena Gershon.

Corky, a tough ex con, falls for Violet, the gangsters moll, they set up a plan to steal millions of the mobs money. Reactions can be unpredictable in stressful situations (like when the mob boss is coming to collect the money you've misplaced) and things don't quite go to plan.

Although gangsters and big money making schemes don't generally feature in the plot of movies that I enjoy, this one pulls it all off to make a fabulous viewing experience. This is a very sexy movie, I think it should appear somewhere in everyone's top 5. If you haven't seen this you really do need to find a copy or check it out online asap.

If these walls could talk 2 (2000)

Starring Vanessa Redgrave, Marian Seldes, Michelle Williams, Chloe Sevigny, Sharon Stone and Ellen DeGeneres

Covers the story of women and lesbianism of three decades in three segments. 1961 - when a lady dies leaving her long term partner alone you see the agony and mixed emotions as secrets remain hidden and the partner is reminded that she is not 'family',  1972 - Dealing with the issues of prejudice and feminism and learning how to face those prejudices we all may carry. 2000 - A lesbian couple want to have a child and have to find the best way to achieve this and decide if it is right to bring a child into a prejudiced world.

This is a marvelous movie touching on so many issues that it becomes a roller coaster ride of emotions and self discovery. A great cast and so beautifully put together another must see movie.

Better than chocolate (1999)

Starring Karyn Dwyer and Christina Cox.

A very diverse group of friends go through challenges of love and rebellion whilst trying to protect and still be honest with a naive parent how has unexpectedly come to stay and is unaware of her daughter's sexuality.

A great comedy with many serious issues that are faced head on. A movie full of youthfulness, of trying not to be afraid when every move seems to be the most important of your life.

Imagine me and you (2005)

Starring Piper Perabo, Lena Headey and Matthew Goode.

A story of love a first sight. Rachel and Heck are getting married and are very happy. When Rachel starts talking to their florist, Luce, things start to change in a way no one ever expected.

A heart warming romantic comedy. Like any good rom com it'll make you laugh and it'll make you cry. A lighthearted movie that re instills the idea that anything can happen when you least expect it.

Tipping the velvet (2002)

Starring Kelley Hawes and Rachael Stirling

Based on the novel of the same name by Sarah Waters. Set in the 1890's it tells the dramatic story of Nancy Astley and her journey through self discovery where up really is up and down couldn't get much worse.

Ok so this isn't strictly a movie it's a three part mini series but still has everything to make it on this list so I hope you'll forgive me that. This is an amazing watch if you haven't seen it you should. It has a great mixture of the seeming surreal, the depressing and the euphoric everything a good movie should have.

I loved Imagine Me & You. Great movie! There's another one but I can't think of the name...I don't own it but I've seen it and I know my local movie store has it. Should check next time!

I finally ended up going down to the movie store again. And saw the movie there. Kissing Jessica Stein. It's about a woman who is exploring her sexuality and although I haven't seen it in awhile, it was a good watch from memory.
